Reading Virginia Evan’s book, “The Correspondent” reminded me how much I love writing and receiving handwritten messages in the mailbox. Happily, I am not alone. Her book has ignited a resurgence in letter writing. Playing with this notion, today’s session of Winter Wellness for Plant People was all about creating beautiful handmade notecards with our pressed flowers. Patiently, we had waited for those treasures to dry for a month. Now the blossoms were being transformed into future love letters.
What often surprises me is given exactly the same raw materials for expression, each and every one of us approaches creating differently. The ladies of Avita of Brunswick memory care demonstrate this every time we get together. Original compositions emerge. Personalities manifest in outward expression. Delicate, bold, subtle, colorful, complex, whimsical. With every flower petal they are whispering a message, if you stop to listen.
Taking time for a creative pause feels like recharging an empty battery. Creative expression is renewable soul food. The ladies remind me it’s accessible anytime. Like our fingerprints, nothing can imitate or erase our way of creativity. Not dementia or loss of sight or artificial intelligence.
