Summer Wellness Gardener’s Delight! Herb by Herb.

Sensory engagement with herbs

Avita of Brunswick dementia memory care residents experience the gentle power of engaging our senses with herbs.

As a Therapeutic Horticulture Facilitator, I often witness what feels like small gifts as I spend time with those living with dementia. Today was no exception. I learned early on to prepare for the unexpected and intentionally lean into the unknown nature of this experience. Not resisting but rather embracing and improvising as we go along. Going with the flow truly works well and allows for spontaneous moments.

Today the inspiration happened shortly after I tripped over a completely filled watering can. All the water flowing out and my most authentic self emerging right on cue. Taking the sudden jolt as comic relief on a very hot day. From there I gracefully transitioned into what would be the most memorable part of our time in the garden. I slowed down. I let go of the focus of planting our herbs. It would be great if it happened but the opportunity to truly experience each and every one of the herbs was more important.

One of my favorite books by Anne Lamott is “Bird by Bird.” I read it many years ago but the beautiful message of being fully present and deeply exploring one thing at a time is something I’ve never forgotten. It was exactly what we did next with the herbs. I picked up the first herb. A lovely borage with its blue star shaped bloom. I walked around slowly and each person touched the leaves, gazed at the flower, smelled it. Then one of the ladies lovingly planted it. We repeated this ritual with every single herb. The ladies crushed the leaves of each herb and released the fragrant oils and brought them to their noses. Recognition followed by smiles and looks of deep pleasure spread across the group. It was quiet and slow and magical.
